Hands On For Kids Gallery: Paint Days!

The Hands On For Kids Gallery is a great place to bring your favorite young artists. Our goal is to provide an opportunity for learning about the arts in a fun-filled casual and cozy setting. Designed for families with young children, the Gallery is open daily for self-directed activities. Children can create to their hearts content, and parents don't have to worry about the mess. Paints, brushes, paper and smocks provided.

The USS Monitor was engaged in battles continuously from May 6 until September 1, 1862 in both the campaign to retake Hampton Roads and General McClellan's Peninsula Campaign. Life was hard for the 58 crew members, but through their courage and resourcefulness, they learned how to employ the Monitor's unique capabilities. The lessons learned influenced 34 Monitor class war ships during the Civil War and beyond.

In the past five years, there have been more than 140 shipwrecks, with more than 1,000 people losing their lives. Many of those who survived the wrecks faced the even greater challenge of survival at sea.
