Bruce Hornsby Performs the Music of SCKBSTD - The Making of a Musical
January 8, 2011
Hornsby, a Williamsburg native, is a three-time Grammy Award winner with 25+ years in the music industry. Hornsby will perform the music from the upcoming SKBSTD – A New Musical by Bruce Hornsby, which will have its world premiere also in January at The Wells Theatre.
Hornsby’s one-night only concert will benefit the production of SCKBSTD, which includes 19 original songs by Hornsby and co-lyricist Chip deMatteo. Eight of the songs from SCKBSTD are featured on Hornsby’s 2010 release Levitate, which American Songwriter called “a staggeringly great collection of songs by one of our most gifted songwriters and instrumentalists playing at the top of his game.”
SCKBSTD - A New Musical By Bruce Hornsby will premiere at Norfolk’s historic Wells Theatre January 18 – February 6, 2011. This new musical about today’s American family tells the story of close-knit small town rocked with rumor and fear when a stranger moves in and cruises the streets in his Dodge. The story was written by fellow Virginian Clay McLeod Chapman and the production is being directed by Broadway and Tony Award-winning director John Rando. The world premiere of SCKBSTD is produced by VSC by special arrangement with Michael Rafael and David Riemer of Spiral Staircase LLC. It is the third play in VSC’s American Soil series, which tells the rich stories of Southeastern Virginia. BB&T is the sponsoring presenter of SCKBSTD.
Bruce Hornsby has enjoyed a stellar career as a singer-performer, songwriter and collaborator. His early commercial success began when The Way It Is – the title track of Bruce Hornsby and the Range's 1986 debut album – became the most-played song on American radio in 1987, winning ASCAP's Song of the Year award. The Way It Is and subsequent hits Mandolin Rain and Every Little Kiss established Hornsby as pop act, while high-profile work with the likes of Don Henley and Huey Lewis made him an in-demand collaborator.
Over the years, Hornsby has pursued a more personal, idiosyncratic musical path, successfully venturing into jazz, classical, bluegrass and even electronica, as reflected by such acclaimed recent releases as the bluegrass project Ricky Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby and the jazz trio album Camp Meeting, with Jack deJohnette and Christian McBride. Hornsby has collaborated with such diverse figures as Ornette Coleman, Bob Dylan, Bela Fleck, Charlie Haden, Bonnie Raitt, Elton John, Branford Marsalis, Pat Metheny, Robbie Robertson, Leon Russell, Chaka Khan, Wayne Shorter, Squeeze, Tupac Shakur and Sting. He has also performed more than 100 shows as the Grateful Dead’s guest keyboardist.
Support for the concert is provided by Wilbanks Smith & Thomas Asset Management, LLC.
