Portsmouth Horseshoe Club

The Portsmouth Horseshoe Club was organized on April 3, 2003 at the home of Robert Snowden. There were seven members present, and officers were elected during the following week. We started out with seven members. As of January 2010, we have twenty members.

The club members have participated in many tournament events. We have 6 Virginia State Singles Class Champions in three different classes: Sherwood R. Brown won State Class in 2003, David Moser and Jim Walls won State Class in 2004, Bill Maitland won State Class in 2006, and James Allen and Don Masters won the 2009 State Singles Class Championship in their class. We also have one Senior State Champion, David Moser and one Elder State Champion, Don Masters.

In our League Play, Sherwood Brown won the "Man of Steel Award" in 2004 and 2007. Don Masters won it in 2005, 2006 and 2009. Jim O'Quinn is the new Champion and the 2008 "Man of Steel." In our 2008 League Team Doubles, Sherwood Brown and Deforest Mapp won the Team competition. That was Sherwood's second Championship in a row. In the 2009 League Team Doubles, Robert Snowden and Paul Caviness won. In 2009, the Club presented a new award, The League Player Of The Year, which went to Jim Allen. Other members of the club won many class tournament events.

Our Club colors are red, white and blue and our club motto is "Let Um Ring." Our season runs March through November at the Coast Guard Base. League play is every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30pm to dusk. We are still looking for new members including male and female; also Junior boys and girls. See you at the pits and "Let Um Ring."
