    Comment on Facebook

The Muse Writers Center in Norfolk, Virginia is an organization for Hampton Roads writers, new and experienced, to come together in creative writing classes, readings, and special events. We offer low cost, introductory and university-level writing classes and seminars for writers of all ages, backgrounds, and experience, from beginning students to advanced/professional writers. Offerings include those in poetry, fiction, memoir, creative non-fiction, magazine writing, screenwriting, playwriting, comic book writing, cook book writing, children’s book writing, and grammar. Classes in social networking, blogging, photography, songwriting, and standup comedy are also offered, as are many classes designed for pre-teen and teen writers.

Our instructors are all working writers and published authors who have taught courses at colleges, universities, and other community organizations. Classes have drawn more than 1000 students from the Hampton Roads, Virginia communities, including Northeastern North Carolina, and are offered for children and teens (ages 8-18) and adults (ages 18-post retirement).

The Muse Writers Center makes every effort to provide tuition assistance and scholarships to those who cannot afford a class. To date, our scholarship fund has provided tuition assistance to more than 20 students and has received donations from hundreds of generous people. At the end of each class session, we host free, public reading series, featuring local and regional writers as well as student work from the previous class session. We also host a standup comedy night featuring the work of our student comedians. Readings and comedy nights usually attract 100-200 people per event. Other special events we host include a Poetry Salon on the first Friday of the month and an acoustic jam on the fourth Friday of the month.

The Muse Writers Center—a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation—is dedicated to broadening community awareness and support of the literary arts. In addition to offering writing classes and hosting readings and events, The Muse is a resource center and a place for all writers in the Hampton Roads, Virginia area to come together, share ideas, and figure out what language can hold.
